American figural toothpick or match holder. (I believe former) c1880 which has a bear carrying a rifle walking over a rocky surface next to the toothpick holder. The detail on the bear is very fine. It is unmarked as to maker, but was probably made by Pairpoint Mfg.

It has a standard base used by them. There is a similar bear figural napkin ring in the book by Gottschalk and Whitson's book. Figural napkin Rings: Collectors Identification and Value Guild.

, on page 48 in plate 99. That figural napkin ring was also not marked as to maker. I guarantee this figural toothpick holder is authentic. Figural napkin rings and figural toothpick holders are very collectable, that is why I hunt for them around Australia. Figural toothpick holders are generally rarer as they were shared whereas everyone had a napkin ring. This figural napkin ring is. I have not polished it, just washed it in warm soapy water. The piece has some issues and some wear to the silverplate although some might just be tarnish.

The most worn spot is on the toothpick holder where one is likely to grab the item with the thumb. I also think the rifle of the bear may have been a bit longer.
